Meet Kitatin – Curacao’s huge online community

Kitatin is a social networking site for the Dutch Antilles. They claim to have 20.000 visitors a day so pretty big. Kitatin focuses on being a party site, for party pictures, discussions, a teen hangout, dating, just meeting people, polls and whatever else. It’s a real ‘local’ site used by people who live here on Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire or used to live here and moved to other countries. Although the site is also open for the ‘European Dutchman’ who moved to one of the islands, I never heard of any of them being active on the site. I decided to sign up, join the fun and see what it’s all about.

I happen to know one of the two founders of Kitatin. Kitatin was born out of pure fun. It started out as a picture gallery some years ago. They slowly added the possibility to add comments and from there the website grew to a real social media website. In the meantime they didn’t really change the design. Why change it when it’s successful? Of course that is true but when you first arrive on Kitatin.com you feel like you are thrown back into the web design Stone Age. But that’s only after you have solved the puzzle on how to get rid of the huge pop-ups, which appear in your screen. I am an Internet and design lover so it doesn’t start off very well. But I am not complaining as I really like the love behind the site and apparently it still works for a lot of people.
Attention: this website is an Internet Explorer lover as it’s the only browser you can register in. So that’s why I dusted off my old Dell and cheated on my Mac. After it took me 20 minutes to complete the registration (tried 4 different browsers) it said that it would send me an email with the password but unfortunately it was never delivered for some reason. So no login for me. I guess I’ll just limit this article to sort of a site review.
You can immediately start finding people and you get profile pictures right away. Of course there are pictures of beautiful women, cool guys and some, which are leaning to soft porn. It’s always fun to see those profile pictures because that’s what somebody decides that the world should see (and future employers so watch out!)
Then I am off to the forums. Man, there are a lot of discussions going on. It seems like somebody is reacting every second! The topics vary from dating problems to serious discussions: a lot of fun to read and hopefully helpful to some people.
What else? There is a small news section with news in Papiamento. There is a job section. There is a Kitatin plaza, which is a marketplace with a lot of stuff for sale. There is Kitatin Sexuality, which provides information about venereal diseases. So much to do and so much to see, which makes it a really cool website. And the advertisers seem to realize that as there is a lot of advertising!
For me, I am just going to stick with my Facebook, Twitter account and the local newspaper. My brain is a little bit too small for all that extra information and all those extra discussions. Also my efforts to join and see through the web design from the 90’s fell short, I just don’t have the patience. But I can image that you want to be involved with Kitatin and also I can see why there are so many visitors. It’s like a big online city filled with a lot of activities, information and people to meet, which makes it a lot different than let’s say a Facebook. But I do hope they upgrade the design and the technical difficulties. Go Kitatin!
