3G phones on Curacao, littering in Salina and Laser 101

Curacao information mailbag
When I introduced the Meet Curacao Mailbag last week, I really didn’t know what to expect. Were people going to like the idea? Was I going to get swamped? Was I going to get a gratuitous amount of hate mail? What exactly is a “Justin Bieber” and why does it keep trending on Twitter????

These questions kept me awake at night but in the end, our readers had some nice submissions for the mailbag. So, let me just never mind this flimsy introduction and get right to it.

3G phones
Hey,

When do you think we’ll have 3G for phones here in Curacao?

Frank

Ah, a tech question to break the ice. Right up my alley! Well, I have written about this numerous times on Curacao Connected and I’ll recap it here for those who still have questions regarding 3G internet and cell phones.

Right now, UTS’ 3G chip will only give you ‘data’. That means, most of us are just using the chip in the special little modem and getting 3G internet on our laptops or desktops. You can stick the chip in a 3G enabled cellphone and you should be able to surf and have data transfers on your phone as well. Some people have e-mailed me and told me that this works on their phone, so we have confirmation that it works like that.

Sadly however, the “voice” part of the equation does NOT work yet. When you have that 3G chip in your phone, you can’t receive calls, which basically defeats the purpose of having a cellphone. UTS said last year that they don’t know yet when they will start offering the 3G with voice, but just a few weeks ago, they said that it should be before the end of 2010.

Considering that they have been talking about voice since 2008, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Do you speak Indonesian?
Hi,

I would like to know what the man that advertises on laser 101 about restaurant Tempo Doeloe in indonesian means in english.

Thank you.

Isabella

I don’t listen to Laser 101 so I don’t know which ad you mean. But I’ll take this as a challenge. I’m going to start listening to Laser these days to hear the ad and I’ll try to have a translation for you hopefully the next time we do a mailbag.

Wife: You never listen to Laser because you’re always listening to that horrible music on Radio One.
Dave: You’re just jealous because I have crazy dance moves!

Bier drinken CuracaoClean up crew
Hi Dave,

Who do you think should remove that broken windshield on the Salina roundabout? It is there for nearly 2 months now…. or maybe somebody removed it this weekend, I didn’t check this morning…

Keep up the good work!

Hugo

I drove passed the roundabout yesterday and the broken windshield was still there. The wife thinks that the person that it belongs to should remove it. Personally, I’m torn. On the one hand, I think Selikor should remove it (I mean, it is what they’re here for) but on the other hand, I’d like to see the government create this special clean up crew that exists solely for immediately cleaning any crap that is on the street. If someone throws a cup on the ground, these guys are on the scene instantly and they pick up the cup while kicking you repeatedly in the groin. That will stop little Johnny from littering!

Ow, and I want this crew to look very snazzy in the process. They need to wear costumes like Iron Man. SPEND MY TAX MONEY WISELY, GOVERNMENT!

Funchi with bakalao?
This question was dropped in the comments…

Toen ik in Juni 09 op Curacao was hoorde ik vaak op de radio het liedje funchi met bakalao..Zou u me kunnen zeggen wat de juiste titel en uitvoerder is van dit nummer?
Alvast bedankt!
Kuikentje

Dave: Eh………
Dave: * stares off into space *
Wife: See, if it’s not on Radio One, you don’t know it.

The point was…when I asked UTS if the chip will work in my phone, they said that it would only work with ‘data’ and no ‘voice’. Another friend of mine asked when 3G would be ready for phones and the answer was “we don’t know.

I took their word for it and a few more people confirmed that when they put the 3G chip in their phone, that they could not call…only get data transfer.

If you are able to get voice and data with your chip in the phone…..well, that’s very good to know then. Thank you for the update. Now we have one more option to mention.

Wat betekent Chepe Repe Chepe? En waar gaat het liedje over?
