David’s top 10 Curacao restaurants – part 1

restaurants-curacao-top-10
One of my favorite things to do here on the island is going out and having a nice dinner with the wife. There’s just something about dressing up nicely, going out and having a great meal in a nice restaurant.
That said, since I’m always discussing restaurants and eating facilities, I thought that I’d come up with my own little “top 10 Curacao restaurant list”.

These are the best places to eat in Curacao in my opinion and I’m basing my decisions on the overall quality of the food, the service, the atmosphere, the scenery and all of my personal experiences at said establishment. Keep in mind that I’m just tossing everything together in here. From “fancy” restaurants to fast food joints to grills and bars.

Wife: Knowing you, it will just be 10 fast food joints..
Dave: I am a culinary master! I invented the “Iron Chef” concept!
Wife: You can’t even boil water…

10 De Snackbar (Caracasbaaiweg/Gasora)

The winner of Meet Curacao’s “beste friettent van Curacao” competition and one of my favorite places to get food on the island. It’s really close to my house and sometimes there’s nothing better than a good cheeseburger and french fries platter after a long day at work.

Wife: You write for a living. How tiring can that be?
Dave: I also fight crime and save countless lives by performing complicated surgeries!
Wife: You have trouble operating the car stereo…..

Either way, when your driving around and you want to grab a quick bite of food, the Snackbar is absolutely perfect. It’s fast, it always tastes great and the price will suit your wallet for sure.

Some of what they offer: Burgers, fries, hot dogs, kaas souffle, kroket

de-tropen-curacao9 De Tropen (Mahaai/Across Centrum Supermarket)

The place where I have probably eaten at the most, excluding McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC and Subway. De Tropen is a classic and if you are looking for a place with great atmosphere, it’s really hard to top this one. The service is always top notch, the food is good and the free Wifi is sweet as well. Mondays are ‘quiz night’ and you’ll be able to see musical acts every so now and then as well. Bonus points for the insane atmosphere when watching the Dutch national team play soccer on the big screen (Damn you Dirk Kuyt!)

Some of what they offer: Burgers, wraps, club sandwiches, fries, salads

8 Sambal (Zuikertuin Mall)

Probably the most unique restaurant on the island. You can sit inside, in the really cozy restaurant environment, or on the outside patio while enjoying the open air. The Indonesian menu is terrific and the food was terrific every single time I was there. On certain days you’ll also find the chef outside as he barbeques on the patio right next to you.

The restaurant may be small but the service is excellent. If you’re in the mood for something spicy, you really can’t top Sambal.

Wife: The last time you ate spice food…you ended up crying.
Dave: I WAS NOT CRYING. MY ALLERGIES WERE ACTING UP!

Some of what they offer: Indonesian cuisine, soups, sates, rice, bami, nasi, loempia

sai-kung-restaurant-curacao7 Sai Kung (Rio Canario/Across the gas station)

When you’re in the mood for Chinese food (the Curacao version of Chinese Food), you have to go to Sai Kung. The menu is insane, the food is always delicious and the price is very decent. On certain days, there’s nothing that I want more than a good ‘Fish Cutlet ku batata’ and Sai Kung delivers every single time. I tend to avoid the place when they have ‘Karaoke Night’ because I don’t want to embarrass the other guests with my brilliant singing…

Wife: Every time you sing, a puppy dies…
Dave: You just can’t appreciate true genius when you see it.

Some of what they offer: Bami, nasi, cutlet, fried rice, shrimps, roast pork, roast chicken

6 O Mundo (Zuikertuin Mall)

I probably should rate them higher but the last time we ate there, they lost some points. The waiter seemed to ignore us most of the time and the fact that a cat was chasing a mouse under our table did not help much either.

Other than that time however, eating at O Mundo has been great to say the least. The surroundings are classy, the atmosphere is great and it’s one of those places that you really dress up to go. The menu is a little exotic and it tends to be pricey, but that’s to be expected with the atmosphere and environment that they offer. In the end, it’s just a beautiful place with great food. Bonus points for the ‘Acoustic Night’ on Thursdays.

Some of what they offer: A nice variety of beef. Steaks, chicken, pork

I might need to update this list after I visit Snapper, Lobster House and Rozendaals. I just can’t seem to make it those places. Plans always cancel or they are full….

But hopefully I’ll visit those three soon.

I’ve been to snapper just when it opened. It needed some more work. I am very curious how it is now. Lobster house… somehow I feel the need to eat dinner while overlooking the water (and not autocity). Sambal is of course my exception because of the food. let’s hope they branche out to the oceanside ;)

I really like Sawasdee, a thai/indonesian restaurant near Salina. It is one my favourites, especially the thai food. They know me there by my first name ;) I have to try Snapper one of these days..

Rozendaals is toch echt mijn favoriet. Goede sfeer, snelle bediening, lekker eten, niet TE duur. Alleen de maitre mag wel wat minder praten :D
