Beach Tennis in Curacao

In Curaçao, one of the great things to do is that you can play almost any sport outdoors year-round without feeling a chill or getting rained out. Having lived in Canada for most of my life, many of my experiences playing sports involved being indoors in a damp and dimly lit gymnasium where the sounds of voices and bouncing balls echoed like the sounds of a busy freeway. Here in Curaçao the climate is so reliable, not to mention the perfect temperature throughout the day, so it is simple to plan a game with family and friends or organize a public sports event.
One of the many sports that I have gained much interest for recently is beach tennis, which was newly introduced to the island last year. For those who have never heard of beach tennis, it is a combination of tennis and beach volleyball.
The game is played on a beach volleyball court with a tennis ball and a net similar to a volleyball net. The rackets are round and wooden and the game is played similar to a game of tennis. Beach tennis has become very popular in Aruba over the last few years and is also played in other parts of the world such as Brazil and the United States. In November, Curaçao hosted its very first International Beach Tennis Tournament at Mambo Beach and, although challenging, was a ton of fun. The best part was cooling down in the water after a tough game, chatting with new friends, and cheering for my favourite teams.
So if you are ever looking for something new and exciting to do on the weekend, try your hand at beach tennis. You may discover skills that you never thought you had. See you at the beach!
